E-scooter seized in Potters Bar

An e-scooter has been seized by police in Potters Bar after officers spotted it being ridden dangerously.

At around 5.30pm on Tuesday 21 July, officers from the Potters Bar and Shenley Neighbourhood Policing Team were in Darkes Lane carrying out patrols to tackle anti-social behaviour. The issue is currently a neighbourhood policing priority.

The officers spotted a young person riding an e-scooter around the train station forecourt and pavement, with another young person on the back.

The vehicle was being ridden at speed in an anti-social manner and causing a hazard as it tried to avoid buses, vehicles and pedestrians. Officers seized the e-scooter and as the young person was unable to provide owner details for the scooter, it will now be disposed of.

Sergeant Noel Buckley said: “We witnessed this e-scooter causing issues for both drivers and pedestrians and it’s lucky that nobody was hurt.

“E-scooters can reach excessive speeds and must be used responsibly. It is important to point out that they can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission. While they can be used on public land as part of a government trial, there are no trials taking place anywhere in Hertfordshire at this time.

“We know that residents feel strongly about this issue so I hope news of the action we’re taking is reassuring.”
